Being a Formula 1 fan in Germany? Pretty cool – but unfortunately not for free. If you want to watch all the F1 races live and in good quality in 2025 – preferably with German commentary – then there are basically two real options. Which one is better depends on whether you are currently in Germany or somewhere else: on vacation, abroad on business or perhaps just over the border.
I’ve been through the whole thing myself several times – thanks to VPN, I was able to stream races from Italy or Poland without any problems. So here is my overview of how to stream Formula 1 live – legally, in HD, with or without a paid subscription.
📡 Option 1: Sky Germany – All in, but not cheap
The most convenient option for German viewers is and remains Sky Deutschland. Sky has the official rights to all F1 races in Germany and provides an all-round carefree package:

- 📺 All 24 races of the 2025 season live
- 🎙️ German commentary, expert analysis and own studio programs
- 🎥 Selected races in 4K UHD
- 📲 Can be used on TV, smartphone, tablet or laptop
💶 What does it cost?
Sky F1 is usually part of the Sky Sport package, which starts at around €25 per month – but depending on the offer or package, it can also be more expensive.
🌍 What to do abroad?
Sky DE is geo-blocked. So if you are outside Germany, you will only see: “This content is not available in your country.” But: No problem with VPN!
This is how it works:
- Activate VPN (e.g. Surfshark)
- Choose a server in Germany
- Log in to Sky
- Watch races – as if you were sitting at home on the couch
⚠️ Tip: Sky sometimes recognizes VPNs – use a premium service such as Surfshark, which is specially optimized for streaming.
🆓 Option 2: ORF & ServusTV – Watch F1 for free with VPN from Austria
This is my personal favorite: If you don’t want a Sky subscription, there is a completely legal, free alternative – via Austrian television.
📺 What do you need?
- ORF or ServusTV – both channels have F1 rights in Austria
- Commented in German, top quality, often with archive function
🌍 Problem: geoblocking
ORF and ServusTV are also blocking access outside Austria. The solution? Right, VPN again.
This is how it works:
- Activate Surfshark (or another VPN)
- Select server in Austria
- open orf.at or servustv.com
- Enjoy races free of charge and in HD
💬 Personally, I mostly use ORF because the stream is stable and the commentators aren’t quite as over the top as on Sky.
🏁 Germany Grand Prix 2025? Unfortunately again no answer
Anyone hoping to experience Formula 1 live in Hockenheim or at the Nürburgring in 2025 will unfortunately be disappointed. There is no race in Germany on the calendar this year either.
Nevertheless, interest remains high: teams like Mercedes, drivers like Nico Hülkenberg and the spectacular switch from Hamilton to Ferrari keep the excitement high. And Red Bull – with its Austrian background – also has a huge fan base in Germany, not least thanks to Max Verstappen.
🔑 Short & sweet: Watching F1 in Germany – your options
Platform | Price | VPN necessary? | Advantages |
---|---|---|---|
Sky Germany | approx. 25 €/month | Yes (outside DE) | All races live, HD/4K, own studio |
ORF / ServusTV | Free of charge | Yes (outside AT) | Legal & free, no registration required |
📌 My tip at the end
If you are in Germany and want to save money: Use VPN, switch to Austria and watch Formula 1 for free on ORF or ServusTV.
If you are abroad, VPN helps you to regain access to your favorite channels – legally and stress-free.
