Social networking is an integral part of our lives, but few platforms stir up as many conflicting emotions as TikTok. For some it is a source of entertainment full of dance videos and trends, while for others it is a dangerous space where generations of young people can get lost. Unfortunately, some of the challenges that appear on the platform are not harmless and can have tragic consequences.
Albania has therefore decided to go the way no one in Europe has gone before – it has banned TikTok. What are the reasons for this decision and what reactions has it provoked?
Violence and bullying on TikTok: A Hidden Threat to Youth
TikTok is a Chinese social platform, which in itself raises suspicions in the cyber and information security field. A number of countries have already debated restricting it, and even the National Office for Cyber and Information Security in the Czech Republic has identified TikTok as a potential threat.
However, the content that is distributed on TikTok is a bigger problem than the security risk itself. This often targets minors and has serious consequences:
- Violent scenes: videos are emerging that normalise aggressive behaviour.
- Dangerous challenges: Some challenges involve activities that can directly endanger life and health.
- Cyberbullying: young users often experience attacks that leave psychological effects on them.
It is hard to imagine that a short video could have such dramatic effects, but it is the age and vulnerability of young people that makes TikTok particularly problematic.
Why did Albania decide to ban it?
Albania took this step after a series of incidents that affected young users of the platform. The defining moment was a conflict between two young men that arose on TikTok and ended tragically with the death of one of them after a stabbing.
The Albanian authorities reacted immediately and took radical measures. Before the ban itself, more than 1 300 discussions took place between the authorities, parents and teachers, with the vast majority (up to 90%) supporting the ban.
