Hide.me Review: How Safe and Effective Is It?

Hide.me offers an excellent VPN service for users looking to stay private on the web. They offer everything you would expect from a top-notch VPN service, including a no logs policy, and fast connection speeds.

While the relatively low monthly price of $4.99 for a basic account looks tempting, it only permits one simultaneous connection, and it limits your data transfer to 75 GB per month. To get the same features that most other VPNs offer as part of their basic plans, you would have to pay $9.99. While that’s a bit on the high side, you might decide that the high server speeds make it worth the cost.

Read on for our detailed analysis and evaluation of Hide.me’s privacy and connection features.

Hide.me - Fast and Anonymous

Committed to privacy. Fast server speeds. P2P-friendly. Based in Malaysia. 5 simultaneous connections (premium plan only). 14-day money-back guarantee.

Privacy

Hide.me, like all of the VPN providers that we recommend, is committed to your privacy and does not log any traffic data whatsoever. You won’t be tracked, monitored, or limited in your browsing in any way.

For troubleshooting purposes, Hide.me temporarily logs randomly assigned usernames and corresponding non-public internal IP addresses—but these are securely erased every few hours. We don’t see this as detrimental to your privacy in any way.

As a Malaysia-based company, Hide.me does not fall under the jurisdictions of the 14 Eyes, nor would it be capable of complying with any requests for data. As their privacy policy states, “Since we store no connection logs, we couldn’t associate a request with a customer identity even if legally compelled to do so.”

Moreover, Hide.me makes clear that they would rather shut down operations than comply with any law that would require them to keep a persistent log of customer connections.

Overall, we’re fully satisfied with Hide.me’s privacy policy, and you should have no doubts about trusting them with protecting your traffic.

P2P File-Sharing

Once again, Hide.me does not log customer traffic, so it has no way to monitor what you download or browse, and that includes P2P file-sharing. If you use BitTorrent or any kind of P2P networking, you will never experience throttling, monitoring, or censorship if you use Hide.me.

If you’re concerned about copyright laws, remember that Hide.me keeps no logs, so they are unable to comply with any requests to identify or ban specific users from their network. When you use Hide.me, your anonymity is always preserved.

Hide.me highly encourages it users to avoid using specific servers for P2P traffic (particularly US servers) where copyright laws are stringent. But this is entirely self-regulated, and P2P traffic is not blocked or monitored on any servers.

Travel, Geo-Shifting, and Unblocking

Hide.me offers more than 80 servers in 24 countries, which is more than enough if you’re interested in rotating your IP addresses frequently, or changing locations as you travel. Moreover, their servers are rarely busy, especially their international servers, so you can expect fast connection speeds no matter where you are.

We’ve seen conflicting reports from users who try to access Hide.me in countries with VPN restrictions, particularly China. As Hide.me does not offer any particular protocols for obfuscating your VPN connection, you may have issues using it in locations that restrict VPN usage, from countries like China and Turkey, to many hotels, schools, and businesses. (If you’re planning to travel to a country with restrictive internet censorship, we especially recommend NordVPN and Perfect Privacy.)

By letting you switch server locations, Hide.me can let you access geographically blocked content around the world. For example, if there’s a particular German TV show that you like that is only available in German, switching to Hide.me’s Frankfurt server will allow you to access it.

That said, Hide.me does not specialize in unblocking geo-locked content, so Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube may be unavailable to Hide.me users. (If you need a VPN to access Netflix, we recommend NordVPN or TorGuard.)

VPN Features

Hide.me’s best feature, in our opinion, is its incredibly fast server speeds. Servers are rarely above 15% capacity (and international servers in particular are rarely above 5%). There are no bandwidth limits, and streaming and P2P traffic are all extraordinarily fast, no matter which server you use.

That said, you should note that the basic (plus) VPN subscription limits your data transfer to 75 GB (about 53 hours of YouTube). You’re also limited to connecting a single device at a time. If you plan to travel at all, or even if you plan to connect, say, your phone and your laptop Wi-Fi at your local cafe, the basic plan won’t suffice. You’ll have to subscribe to the more expensive premium plan, which offers 5 simultaneous connections and unlimited data transfer.

With both plans, you also get access to all the major VPN protocols (OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP, SSTP, IPSec, and SoftEther). However, if you want to be able to use a SOCKS proxy (which gives you faster speeds for connections where encryption isn’t required) you’ll need to get the premium plan.

Conclusion

Overall, we think Hide.me offers a solid line-up of features, and, assuming you purchase the premium plan, you won’t feel like you’re missing anything. If speed isn’t as important to you (or if the price of the basic plan seems alluring) we recommend that you take a look at a different VPN provider, such as Private Internet Access, NordVPN, or TorGuard.

But Hide.me is, admittedly, one of the fastest VPNs on our list, so if you don’t mind paying a bit extra for speed, we urge you to test them out for yourselves by taking advantage of Hide.me’s 14-day money-back guarantee (but make sure not to use more than 500 MB of bandwidth, or you won’t be able to get your money back!)
