ExpressVPN Review: How Safe and Effective Is It?

ExpressVPN is a high-end VPN service created for users who are looking for one thing: speed. As one of the fastest VPNs we’ve tested, their annual plan (at $8.32 per month) is worth every penny. If you’re looking to watch a lot streaming content, download large files, or otherwise can’t afford to sacrifice speed for anonymity, ExpressVPN is the choice that we would recommend.

Below you’ll find our detailed analysis of ExpressVPN’s features to help you decide if ExpressVPN is the right VPN for you.

ExpressVPN - Fastest VPN

Blazing-fast speeds. Servers in 90+ countries. P2P-friendly. Offers OpenVPN, IPSec, L2TP, and more. 3 simultaneous connections. 30-day money-back guarantee.

$8.32 per month

ExpressVPN is fully transparent about their minimal logging policy, and our analysis showed no reason to suspect that your privacy would be significantly at risk if you use ExpressVPN. They don’t log user traffic in any way, so they are unable to identify specific users based on IP address data. Like many privacy-conscious VPN services, they also allow anonymous payment via bitcoin.

However, keep in mind that ExpressVPN does keep logs of your location, your ISP, date of connection, and bandwidth (but not your local IP address or the IP address of your VPN selected server). In practice, this does not make it possible to correlate your traffic with specific online activity (unless you happen to be the only VPN user on your selected server on a single day, which is technically possible but highly unlikely).

We applaud ExpressVPN’s transparency regarding their minimal logging practices, and, once again, you should feel completely safe in their hands with regard to your privacy. It doesn’t hurt that they are ardent supporters of internet privacy causes and movements, such as Access Now, an organization that fights against internet censorship.

(If you’re looking for a high-end VPN that doesn’t log at all, we recommend Perfect Privacy. If you’d prefer to pay less, Private Internet Access and NordVPN are also great options.)

P2P File-Sharing

ExpressVPN does not monitor or tamper with user traffic, so it’s no surprise that P2P traffic (e.g. BitTorrent) isn’t censored or limited in any way. They have no way to identify users, nor the ability to tie them back to specific traffic, P2P or otherwise.

If you’re concerned about copyright claims, ExpressVPN can’t see what you’re downloading, so they have no ability to ban users or send out notices to downloaders of copyrighted materials. As they said in an interview with TorrentFreak: “As we do not keep any data or logs that could link specific activity to a given user, ExpressVPN does not identify or report users as a result of DMCA notices. User privacy and anonymity are always preserved.”

Travel, Geo-Shifting, and Unblocking

ExpressVPN has an astounding 2000 servers in over 90 countries, which is plenty for most users who travel or want to be able to change their IP addresses regularly.

As a premium VPN service, ExpressVPN is nearly always wicked fast, so if you need to download large files or like to watch a lot of streaming content, you’ll be covered no matter where you are in the world.

That said, you should expect to have mixed results if you try watching Netflix, Hulu, or other major content sites with geographically-locked content. ExpressVPN claims to be able to unlock these sites, but users have reported difficulties nonetheless. Netflix and other companies spend incredible amount of resources into banning VPN IP addresses, so this isn’t unexpected. (If you’re looking for a VPN to watch Netflix, we recommend NordVPN or TorGuard).

Likewise, ExpressVPN is not 100% reliable for usage in China, Turkey, or other countries and organizations where VPN users are heavily monitored or banned. This is to be expected, as ExpressVPN doesn’t have a StealthVPN protocol or obfuscated servers that can enable you to disguise your VPN connection. This is an unfortunate omission for what would otherwise be a stellar high-end VPN service. (If you need a reliable VPN for China, we recommend NordVPN or Perfect Privacy.)

VPN Features

As we’ve already said, ExpressVPN is one of the fastest VPN services that we know, so if you’re looking to browse without noticing a significant reduction in speed, ExpressVPN is almost certainly your best choice. The VPN app itself comes with a built-in speed tester to ensure that you’re always connected to the fastest VPN server based on your location.

ExpressVPN offers four VPN protocols: OpenVPN, SSTP, L2TP, IPSec, and PPTP. For most users, this should be enough to guarantee that you can always connect privately to the internet, no matter where you are.

They don’t offer multi-hop capabilities, obfuscated servers, or a specific Onion over VPN protocol, so if you’re looking for these more advanced connection types, you should consider a different service.

ExpressVPN supports all major platforms (Mac, Windows, Linux, Chromebook, iOS, Android etc.) and they allow you to connect up to 3 devices at the same time using one subscription.

3 simultaneous connections is a bit on the low side, as far as VPNs go, but always remember that if you have multiple internet-connected devices in your home or office, you can install ExpressVPN directly on your router. This allows you to connect as many devices as you want to VPN, without restrictions.

Of course, if you’re looking to travel with more than three internet-capable devices, ExpressVPN would not be the ideal choice for you.

ExpressVPN’s customer service is top-notch, and we found that they’re fast at responding to most queries, as you would expect from a premium VPN service.

ExpressVPN is expensive compared to many of the other VPNs that we recommend, but the speedy service that they offer more than compensates for the extra few dollars you’ll be paying per month to use their service. If you’re looking to watch a lot of streaming content, or bypass bandwidth throttling or snooping from your ISP, we highly recommend ExpressVPN.

If you’re not sure, or want to test their speed claims yourself, don’t simply take it from us: ExpressVPN has a 30-day money-back guarantee (far more than most other VPNs) so you can try out their services for yourself without any risk to you.
